CHILDREN'S MINISTRIES

 

OUR MISSION

 

Our mission in children’s ministry at DFUMC is to help children & their families build strong spiritual foundations for their lives while guiding them into a loving, serving relationship with Jesus Christ & their church. We strive to offer a safe, wholesome, & fun environment in which children can play, learn, & grow in the love of Christ.

SAFE SANCTUARY

Dickson 1st UMC adopted a Safe Sanctuary policy in 2002. This is a child safety & abuse prevention policy designed to protect children & youth in the church. Our church follows the “two-adult” rule which means children are supervised by 2 adults at all times and our pick up & drop off policy requires that children 3rd grade and under must be picked up and dropped off from their classes by a parent or guardian. Our Safe Sanctuary Policy contains guidelines for conduct between adults and children and for reporting abuse or suspected abuse. Dickson 1st UMC also has a discipline policy that is included as an addendum to our Safe Sanctuary Policy. A complete copy of our Safe Sanctuary Policy can be obtained from the Director of Children’s Ministries or the Youth Director.  

NURSERY CARE

We have 2 nurseries during our Sunday morning services. Our Little Angels Infant Nursery is designed for infants & toddlers up to 18 months of age. It is located outside the sanctuary in room 101. Busy Bee Toddler Care is for children ages 18 months through 3 years of age & is located upstairs in room 210. We have three nursery coordinators on staff to provide care for the children. Nursery care is provided during Sunday School, Sunday Night Bible Study, The Gathering, and any seasonal services held throughout the year.

SUNDAY SCHOOL

We have 5 Sunday School classes: the 2 year old “Lambs”, the Preschool (3s,4s,&5s) “Lions”, K & 1st graders, 2nd  & 3rd graders, & 4th & 5th graders. The 2 year old “Lambs” class meets in room 211 & the Preschool (3s,4s,&5s) “Lions” class meets in room 209. Our elementary aged children are on the Workshop Rotation Model (WoRM). They all meet together for “gathering time” in room 208 & then split up into their 3 separate class grouping.  These groups each go to one of the following workshops: art, music, drama, games, science, or cooking. The same bible lesson/story is taught for 6 weeks as the children rotate around to each of the workshops. These kid-friendly, multi-media workshops allow the children to gain a deeper understanding of the bible story because they are able to experience it through a variety of ways.

CHILDREN'S CHURCH

We welcome all children in worship service. A Children’s Worship Bulletin is provided at each service and Kid’s Quiet Kits are located outside the church nursery. A Children’s Sermon is given most Sundays at both services. Wee Worship is offered for preschoolers every Sunday during the 10:30 service. Children are dismissed for Wee Worship immediately following the children’s sermon. They meet in room 202. The Kids JAM (Jesus and Me) Service is held on the 2nd & 4th Sundays of each month during the 10:30 service. This service is designed for K-5th graders & meets in LL2. Parents should come pick up their children in the indicated area after each service.

BIBLE KARATE

Bible Karate is a memory verse program designed to help kids memorize God’s word in a fun way. Children work through a list of memory verses of increasing difficulty to earn badges & “karate belts” to place on their bible covers.  

SUNDAY NIGHT BIBLE STUDY

A children's bible study is offered on Sunday Nights at 6pm during the school year (no bible study during June or July). Topics vary, but classes are offered for 2 year olds through 5th graders. A nursery is provided for infants & toddlers.

SNACK SUPPER

Children share a snack supper on Sunday evenings at 5:30 pm in the Fellowship Hall during the school year. Families provide the meal on a rotating basis. A $2 donation per child is appreciated, but certainly not required.

CHILDREN'S CHOIR

Children’s Choir is for K-5th grade children & meets at 5:00 Sunday evenings in room 108 during the fall semester only.

MISSIONS

Children’s mission projects in the past include benefits for Heifer International, Dickson County Help Center, Soles 4 Souls, & the Dickson County Humane Society. We have also helped organize health kits for the victims of hurricane Katrina.

FUN ACTIVITIES

Throughout the year we have several social activities for children & their families. These include: Bring a Friend to Church Day, Easter Egg Hunts, Muffins with Mom, Donuts with Dad, Summer Pool Parties, Family Field Day, Fishing Tournament, Ice cream socials, & our family Christmas Party.

VBS

Vacation Bible School is held every June at our church. We offer classes for 2 year olds through 5th graders.
