JULY 2008 CHILDREN'S CONNECTION NEWSLETTER
VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL 2008 REPORT We
had a record turnout for VBS this year…right at 100 kids registered
& came to VBS at least one day during the week & our average
daily attendance was 85! Praise God! Things went so smoothly, thanks to
our wonderful teachers & volunteers. Thanks so much to all of you
who volunteered your time & talents to help spread the love of Jesus
to kids in our area through vacation bible school. We
have planned a VBS
“reunion” for July 28 at 2pm in the sanctuary. All kids and
parents are invited to attend. We’ll have some time for singing
& being silly, a time for a short devotion, & then The
Nashville Zoo will be here to share some rainforest friends with us.
This event is free, however donations for the zoo program are
appreciated & will be taken at the door. On
Wednesday June 18, eighteen kids & 8 adults came out to Montgomery
Bell State Park to participate in our park clean up day. All the kids
helped clean up along the creek in the campground area & then we
divided into 2 teams. One team went & clean up around “Church
Hollow” (down by the old Presbyterian Church & cabin) &
another group went down the Spillway trail to pick up trash.
Afterwards we had lunch & played A
LOT! The kids & adults got to tie dye tshirts as well
which turned out beautiful! Thanks to Art Hughes who took care of the
lettering of our shirts. They are too cool! Promotion
Sunday is July 27th during Sunday School hour. Toddlers being
promoted to the 2 year olds Sunday School class will be given a Rhyme
Bible, exiting 6th graders will be honored, & incoming 2nd
& 3rd graders will be receiving bibles this year. In
years past it’s only been incoming 3rd graders. We thought
it was time for a change. Starting in 2009 kids will receive their
engraved bible as they go into the 2nd grade. Here is my list
for those receiving bibles. Please let me know ASAP if your child is
left off the list, on the list by mistake, or I’ve got their name
spelled wrong. Only their first & last name will be on their bible
unless a parent requests otherwise. All request need to be in by July 1st.

service is set for July 6th at 7pm in the Dickson County
High School stadium. We have some kids who will be leading the pledge
of allegiance & the pledge to the Christian flag. All families are
invited to come out & join the worship & fellowship time. Our
end of the summer pool party will be July 27th from 3-5 at
Joel & Lisa Perkins house. They live at 720 Highway 48S. Parents
must stay with their children. No life guard on duty! With
the price of gas now reaching $4.00 a gallon, I’ve had to rethink
the home visits idea. I think what I’d like to do is a neat little
questionnaire with the kids….kind of like the email
“questionnaires” that we adults send around at times. The
questions will be simple (for the most part) & if your kids
can’t write very well yet you are welcome to write their answers for
them. I will only be sending questionnaires to kids age 3 & up. I
will answer the same questions in next months newsletter for all the
kids to see. Questionnaires will be sent out in July sometime. You can
drop off your completed sheet in a box I’ll place outside my door.
I’m looking forward to reading the answers! Trey Milam – yellow belt Janesa Wine – blue & purple belts Jannan Wine – orange belt ***JULY
DOJO WILL BE JULY 13TH AT 9AM.*** __________________________________________________________________________________________________ We’ll be taking up a special
offering for the Dickson County Backpack Fund on August 3rd.
Some of you will remember that this organization was our special
offering for Children’s Sabbath in April 2007. We’ll be collecting
all kinds of school supplies in addition to monetary donations that
morning to benefit this charity that helps our so many Dickson County
children get the supplies they need for the school year. Supply lists
will be made available in July. We’ll be joining the youth this
year for our family field day/picnic/youth vs parents softball
game/kids vs parents tball game(?). We’ll be at field #6 in Buckner
Park on August 3rd from 4-8pm. Watch for more details later
in July. We’ll
be having our annual back to school ice cream party on August 10th
at 6pm in the Fellowship Hall. Regular bible study will start back
August 17th at 6pm. More details about the classes,
structure, & schedule to come in August newsletter. If you would
like to volunteer as a teacher for Sunday Night bible study or a
teacher’s helper please contact me. Teaching materials are provided
as are many additional resources for a successful class. Our church will be starting Wednesday
Nights Together on August 13th. This will include a meal,
bible studies, & choir practice. You pick & choose what you
want to attend. I am looking to do short 8 week themed bible studies
aimed at parents & families on Wednesday nights at 6pm starting as
early as this August. Currently we offer childcare from 6-8 pm on
Wednesday evenings but if the need arises we can try to offer a bible
study of some sort for kids to attend while their parents are at bible
study. Please be on the lookout for more details regarding Wednesday
Nights Together in the coming weeks. Incoming
kindergartners & 1st graders will now be allowed to
acolyte with an adult partner (either a parent, grandparent,
aunt/uncle – NO older brothers or sisters). Any incoming 2nd
graders who would like to acolyte or new comers to the church are
welcome to join the ranks of the acolytes as well. We’ll be having a
formal training session on September 7th for those
interested. All ages of new acolytes should make plans to attend this.
Acolytes (2nd grade & older only please) who would like
to learn how to serve communion should make plans to attend as well. Confirmation Retreat is set for
August 15-17th. The location is still being worked out. All
incoming 6th graders & other middle school students who
have not been confirmed need to make plans to attend. Parents &
kids will be receiving more information about the retreat as the time
approaches. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask myself,
Andy Scott, or Allen Weller. We
want to welcome 3 new little ones to our church family this month!
Allen Richard Butler was born on May 24 to Jennie (Edlin) & Matt
Butler. He is welcomed home by his big sister Lacy as well. Lily Renae
Bradford was born on June 17th to our financial secretary,
Whitney, & her husband Darryl. Lily is also welcomed home by her
big brother DJ. Caleb Andrew Scott was born June 20th to
Andy & Stephanie Scott. Welcome to all our new babies! May God
bless your families! email

by Cindy Leach, Minister to Children at North Richland Hills Baptist
Church in North Richland Hills, Texas. She and her husband, Jason, have
two daughters in middle school. This
article appears in the January 2008 issue of ParentLife. “May
the words of my mouth ... be acceptable to You” (Psalm 19:14). If
you have children, you probably have given them the warning “Stop
saying that!” Did you know that God’s Word teaches that the tongue
is something to be tamed? James 3:8 says, “But no man can tame the
tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.” It is true that
such a tiny little body part has great power. So how do you teach your
child to keep his tongue under control? Here is some help for three big
tongue problems. Problem
1: Lying Solution:
Do not let lying get a foothold in your child’s life. When your child
succeeds with a small lie, he is likely to try lying about bigger
things. Start early by emphasizing daily the importance of telling the
truth. When you catch your child in a lie, ask: “Why did you feel you
needed to tell a lie?” Listen to discover what motivated your child to
lie. Solution:
Do not use any word that you would not want your child to repeat.
Remember, your child will follow your example. He is listening. Also
monitor what your child watches, listens to, and reads. Do the movies or
music you allow your child to watch or listen to contain language you do
not want him to use? Do not allow them. Widen your child’s vocabulary
by teaching some fun, appropriate words he can use to shock and amaze
his friends. Solution:
Set a positive example by treating others, including your child, with
respect in all circumstances. How do you talk to your spouse about your
unfair boss after a hard day at work? What did you say about the driver
who cut you off in traffic? Remember, your child will model what he sees
and hears from you. Start
teaching respectful language and manners at an early age. A sassy
attitude that seems cute for your toddler will be a nightmare to change
later. Do not allow your child to speak to you or anyone else in a
disrespectful way. Expect your child to use polite manners, speak in a
calm tone, and use words that reflect his respect for another’s
feelings. Praise him for using his words well. Do
not give in to your child’s begging or tantrums. Ignore your child
when he whines to get your attention. Only respond to requests that are
presented in a polite, respectful way. Children are more likely to use a
disrespectful tone when they are hungry, tired, or angry. So help your
child get enough rest, provide a balanced diet, and teach him to resolve
conflict appropriately in order to prevent potential attitude problems. ·
Think
before you speak. Words blurted out can never be taken back. ·
Be
respectful. Always treat others with kindness and avoid whining. ·
Speak
with purity. Refrain from using vulgar or profane words. ·
Tell
the truth. Help your child understand that telling lies, or half-truths,
sharing gossip, or making up stories is not
acceptable. ·
Please
God. What would God think of what you have to say? An
Appropriate Response
