August 2008

August 3^rd will be our Family Fun Day from 4-6pm at Buckner Park, Field #6. Come out & join us for silly games & goofing off with the whole family. We’ll share a meal with the youth & their parents around 5:30 or so. All children’s families should bring a dessert to share at the meal.

August 10^th will be the annual Back to School Ice Cream Party at 6pm in the Fellowship Hall. Bring along your favorite ice cream topping – be creative! (Don’t just settle for chocolate syrup!)

SUNDAY NIGHT BIBLE STUDY RETURNS!

August 17^th will be our first Sunday night children’s bible study of the school year. Preschoolers will be gathered in room 208 with Ms. Kim Alsobrooks & Ms. Bonnie Sensing. K-5^th graders will be in room 203 with Ms. Jennifer. Preschoolers will have their own special curriculum. The elementary aged kids will be doing something a little different this year. We’ll be doing several short term topical bible studies throughout the year. Our first topic is the God Olympics, which is a 5 week study. After fall break we’ll be picking up with a bible basics class. Children need to bring their bibles to bible study! Snack suppers will be each evening at 5:30. We’ll get a rotation together during our first supper (I’ll take care of that one). We will be meeting on the 3^rd Sunday nights of each month regardless of The Gathering’s schedule. Here is a tentative schedule through fall break. I am going to do my best to stick to it.

August 17 – 5:30 snack supper, 6pm God Olympics Bible Study

August 24 – 5:30 snack supper, 6pm God Olympics Bible Study

August 31 – 5:30 snack supper, 6pm God Olympics Bible Study

September 7– 5pm children’s choir, 5:30 snack supper, 6pm God Olympics Bible Study

September 14 – Holy Rollerthon 5pm (supper to follow but no bible study)

September 21 – 5pm children’s choir, 5:30 snack supper, 6pm God Olympics Bible Study

September 28 - 5pm children’s choir, 5:30 snack supper, 6pm Mission Project Activity (TBA)

October 5 & 12 – Fall break, no activities, start back Sunday October 19

NEW WEDNESDAY NIGHT ADULT BIBLE STUDY

A new Adult Bible Study will be starting August 13th at 6pm entitled "Bible Basics 101". The class will deal with the basics of the bible & address questions dealing with how we got the bible, how it is organized, & how to study the bible. The class will be led by Jennifer Salley & will be 8 weeks in length (Aug 13^th through October 1^st). There is no charge for the class, but an R.S.V.P. would be appreciated. Anyone is welcome to attend this short term bible study. Children’s activities will be provided during the bible study.

ANNUAL SAFE SANCTUARY TRAINING WILL BE SEPTEMBER 7^TH FROM 1:30-2PM.

All teachers & regular volunteers (except nursery volunteers) need to make plans to attend. This meeting will be very short but we must complete our annual refresher of our church’s Safe Sanctuary policies & renew our participation covenants. Please make plans to attend. Refreshments will be served! J

A CPR CLASS WILL BE OFFERED FOR CHURCH MEMBERS ON SEPTEMBER 6^TH FROM 2-4PM IN ROOM 108. Clay Williams will be the instructor & the cost is $25 per person (which is a real bargain!). Deadline for enrolling in this class is September 3^rd. Please see Jennifer to sign up.

HOLY BICYCLES BATMAN!

We will be having a Children's ministry fundraiser on September 14 called The Holy Rollerthon! The concept is similar to a walkathon only kids won't be walking they'll be riding on wheels - bikes, trikes, scooters, wagons - whatever! Just no motorized vehicles, skateboards, or heelies. The kids will start taking pledges August 24^TH. For incentives I'm offering the following: for each kid who brings in $50 in pledges they get to slime me (real green slime!) & for every additional $25 they bring in they get another bucket of slime to dump on my head. If a child brings in $100 they not only get to slime me 3x but they get to slime Brother Allen too! More details about this will be coming soon but go ahead & mark your calendars! It's going to be a blast!

DICKSON COUNTY SCHOOL SUPPLY FUND

            As we all know, school starts August 1^st in Dickson Co. & once again the School Supply program will be donating supplies to families in need. Last year the program assisted about 500 students, for a total of 1700 over the past eight years. The program does not receive money from the county, state, or federal governments & relies completely on donations.

            Below is a list of supplies requested by teachers in Dickson County. Please make note that teachers have been very specific about brands (i.e. Crayola, Elmers, & Fiskars). You may drop off your donation in front of the Annie Lee Williams class in room 108 on the designated table. Let’s help make this school year a great one for all students in Dickson County!
